Department Overview
The Hartford Department of Public Works is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems, and public infrastructure. The department also manages snow removal, street sweeping, and seasonal maintenance programs.
Streets & Roads
The Public Works team maintains all city-owned streets and rights-of-way, including:
- Street resurfacing and reconstruction
- Pothole repair
- Curb and gutter maintenance
- Sidewalk repair programs
- Street sign installation and replacement
- Traffic signal maintenance
- Pavement marking

Snow & Ice Removal
Snow plowing operations begin when accumulation reaches two inches or more. Priority routes include emergency routes, arterial streets, and school zones. Residential streets are plowed after priority routes are cleared.

- Sidewalk clearing is the property owner's responsibility within 24 hours of snowfall
- Fire hydrant access must be maintained by adjacent property owners
Stormwater Management
The city manages stormwater runoff through a system of storm sewers, detention basins, and best management practices designed to protect water quality and reduce flooding.

Waste & Recycling
Garbage collection and recycling services are provided through a contracted hauler. The city coordinates schedules and communicates service changes to residents.

Report a Concern
Residents can report infrastructure concerns such as potholes, streetlight outages, drainage issues, or damaged signs by contacting the Public Works Department directly or through the city's contact form.
